After graduating from high school, Reynolds enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University where he majored in drama.[5] In 1998 he took over as host of CTV's Sunday Movie Night with Ryan Reynolds; this show ran until 2003 when it was cancelled due to low ratings and lacklustre receptions by critics[6].

In 2002 Reynolds starred opposite Sandra Bullock in Paul Verhoeven's action thriller Basic Instinct 2 opposite Michael Douglas—"the greatest film debut ever!" according to many critics—and later that year won acclaim for playingacs character Hunter "Iceman" Andrews (an undercover cop) opposite Gerard Butler ("one of cinema's most unpredictable performances")[7].
